DEXA / BMD Test
(Bone Mineral Density Scan)

Early Detection. Stronger Bones. Healthier Future

What is a DEXA/BMD Test?

A DEXA scan, also known as a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test, is a simple, quick, and non-invasive scan that measures the strength and density of your bones. It helps detect osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak and fragile, increasing the risk of fractures.
The test uses low-dose X-rays to compare your bone density to that of a healthy young adult or someone of your age and gender, providing valuable insights into your bone health.

Why is a DEXA Scan Important?

Bone loss happens silently — often without symptoms — until a fracture occurs. A DEXA scan helps in:

  • 1. Early Detection of osteoporosis or osteopenia
  • 2. Assessing fracture risk
  • 3. Monitoring bone health over time
  • 4. Evaluating effectiveness of treatment

This test is safe, painless, and takes about 10–20 minutes. It usually focuses on areas where fractures are most likely, such as the hip, spine, and wrist

Who Should Get a DEXA/BMD Test?

Dr. Varun Tyagi may recommend a DEXA scan if you:
  • • Are a woman aged 50+ or post-menopausal
  • • Are a man aged 60+
  • • Have a family history of osteoporosis
  • • Have had previous fractures from minor falls
  • • Are taking medications (like steroids) that affect bone density
  • • Have medical conditions such as thyroid disorders or rheumatoid arthritist
